Results are discussed of a palaeoecological study the aim of which was to reconstruct the history of raised mires situated in three geographical regions of Poland. Geological structure of the mires chosen was recognized by making ground boring along transects. At the spots where boring was made biogenic deposits were characterized in a continuous way, top-down from the land surface to mineral bedrock. The peat cores sampled were analyzed, among other things, for plant macrofossils content. Radiocarbon dating was also made. The macrofossils were identified and 20 peat-producing subfossil plant communities were reconstructed and characterized. Stages of natural vegetation succession were recreated starting from the initiation of peat deposition until the present time. Taking advantage of the indicatory properties of plants palaeohydrological changes were identified in the successive stages of mire ecosystem development. Analysis of botanical composition of biogenic remains made it possible to investigate ways of mire development leading to ombrotrophy.
