Abstrakt

Privatization of the service sector in Polish forestry since 1991 concerned most of the forest management operations in the State Forest Enterprise. The aim of the study was to determine the actual state and development perspective of this sector and to point out the supporting activities. In the paper the results of the analyses based on 1999 countrywide poll were presented. Questionnaires were obtained from 1359 bigger (more than one employee) and 1902 single-employee private firms. It was found that the small and weakly equipped with specialized machinery firms dominates, while their owners usually have only basic, non-forestry oriented education. The poor economic and legal education was found to be the most important limiting factor in business management along with the low wages for the service and short duration of contracts. Supporting activities of the State Forest Enterprise especially acknowledged by the private firms would be the free of charge workshops on the work safety and subsidizing purchase of the machinery used in ecologically friendly technologies of forestry operations.
