Abstrakt

The investigation was carried out on plots established in the gray alder stands of different development phases: initial, optimal and terminal. It was found that the studied stands have even-age, one-layer and usually single-species structure. The duration of development phases of the stand as well as stand volume and number of trees per hectare indicated the short-lived character of that stands. Another feature of gray alder stands, noticed during the study was the regeneration increase in the course of stand development. It was both in the terms of species abundance and the number, despite the worsening condition of initiating undergrowth due to the increase of weeding. It indicates the transitional character of the gray alder stands on the former farmland in the Western Bieszczady Mountains.
