Does the content of elements in oak and beech leaves changes along with the defoliation of stands?
Within the forest monitoring project in Poland foliar chemistry of oak and beech stands on the II level of permanent observation plots, together with defoliation level assessment were carried out in 1997 and 2001. Negative correlation between P, Ca and Mg and positive correlation with Pb-content in oak leaves and defoliation were found. The ratio of N/P, N/Ca and N/Mg in oak leaves showed even stronger positive correlation with defoliation. Weak negative correlation between content of Fe and positive correlation of Zn-content in beech leaves and defoliation were found. The ratios of elements in beech leaves did not show correlation with defoliation.
