Estimation of the chemical composition of norway spruce Picea abies (L.) Karst. needles as a potential indicator of tree susceptibility to infestion by Ips typographus (L.)
The variability analyze of the biogenic elements and heavy metals content in the needles collected in the Białowieża Primeval Forest in 1996 from healthy and infested by Ips typographus Norway spruces were presented in the paper. Other factors, such as type of forest site (2 encountered) and tree age were also taken into consideration. Results suggest that the chemical composition of needles can not serve as a direct indicator of tree susceptibility to infestation by Ips typographus. However it may be used as a general indicator of spruce health status. As such it showed worsening condition of Norway spruce stands in the Białowieża Primeval Forest since mid 80s.
