The state of converted stands in the upper Silesia Industrial Region
The converted stands in the Upper Silesia forests were found to be in good condition – a result of drastic reduction of industrial emissions during the last two decades. All the native tree species, including Scots pine, displayed good silvicultural values. In contrast, the non-indigenous trees introduced during the stand conversions, namely black pine and eastern red oak, were strongly damaged by parasitic fungi. Taking into account the current air pollution level, distinctly lower than in earlier years, the change of silvicultural practices with respect to composition of tree species for forest regeneration has been proposed.
