Taxonomy and nomenclature of Armillaria (Fr.: Fr.) Staude
Adoption of a generic name Armillaria was preceded by the long-lasting studies accompanied by the controversy on the species finally named Armillaria mellea.
Present taxonomy position of the genus Armillaria are as follows: Kingdom: Fungi, Phylum (Division): Basidiomycota, Class: Basidiomycetes, Order: Agaricales, Family: Tricholomataceae, Genus: Armillaria (Fr.: Fr.) Staude.
There have been seven species of honey fungus found in Europe, five annulate and two exannulate. First group consists of species forming the Armillaria mellea complex: A. borealis Marxmüller and Korhonen, A. cepistipes Velenovský, A. ostoyae (Romagn.) Herink, A. mellea (Vahl: Fr.) Kummer (sensu stricto) and A. gallica Marxmüller and Romagnesi. Exannulate species are as follows: A. tabescens (Scopoli: Fr.) and A. ectypa (Fr.) Lamoure.
