Density of soil Arthropoda and the level of SO2 concentration in the air
SO2 concentration in the air showed a significant relationship with population density of various groups with Arthropoda. The number of individuals within the Collembola population increases with the increasing SO2 concentration in the air (R=0.859 p.001), but the number of individuals within Aranea and the Carabidae populations decreased with higher SO2 concentration. There was no relationship between SO2 concentration in the air and the density of Myriapoda and Formicidae populations. Chemical analyses of soil showed a decrease in soil reaction in the years 1988-1993 and a loss of Mg, Ca and K from the mineral soil level.
