The vegetation changes on the meliorative Biele peatland of the Augustów Forest in 1979–2002
The composition of plant communities on drained Biele peatland changed significantly during the last 23 years. Using the species indicator value method it is demonstrated that today soils are moister than in 1979. Some habitat conditions measured by vegetation indexes were regenerated. The most obvious cause for these changes is neglecting of melioration (especially no maintenance of trenches). In consequence, the raising water table caused the return of primary succession that had been observed before hydro-melioration. Re-examined plant community evolves now to alder swamp forest.
